The University of the People – a New Level of Online Education

Obtaining a bachelor's degree online is not something new for the today's highly technological mind. Online education for a low cost is something people are not used to.

The University of the People offers online education to students from all over the world for a minimal cost. The revolutionary step in the history of education has been taken by Shai Reshef, an entrepreneur with 20 years experience working in the international education market. Currently Reshef is a chairman of the board of an online community for assisting and supporting students worldwide according to Cramster.com.

Online Courses Offered by the University of the People

2 basic online courses are offered by the University of the People this year.

  • A BA in Business Administration
  • A BSc in Computer Science. Students receive a Web-site Engineer certificate having completed the first year of this course. A Software Engineer certificate is issued after the second year of the study.

Each online course includes lessons that involve completing specific weekly assignments, required reading, forum discussions, and exams. Students are grouped in classes according to their progress in the course.

How to Earn a Bachelor's Degree at the Online University

This April, 2009, the University of the People accepts the first admission requests from people who have constant Internet access. The classes start in September, 2009.

The requirements for entering the online University include:

  • A proof of the completion of 12 years of schooling: a high school diploma or an equivalent.
  • Fluency in English. If English is not the applicant’s first language, he or she should have graduated from a school where the primary teaching language is English, or provide a proof of English proficiency.
  • The course in English Composition and Computer Skills should be passed as the first step towards continuing studying at the online University.

The online University will accept only 300 students for the first semester. The choice of applicants to be enrolled will be based on their academic records. The decision about accepting an applicant may also be based on the availability of the place in the course the applicant chooses.

The Cost of Getting a Bachelor's Degree Online

The whole concept of the University of the People is based on the principle of being available to anyone, independently from the applicant’s income or country of residence.

Study materials are free of charge. The only fees applied are:

  • The enrollment fee: $15-$50 depending on the country of origin
  • The exam registration fee: $10-$100 depending on the country of origin

The University of the People is a tuition-free non-profit institution. It is planning to get an accreditation after the required waiting time passes. This year, 2009, the online University will enroll 300 students, who have constant Internet access, and are fluent in English. Two online courses will be available in September: a BA in Business Administration and a BSc in Computer Science. While the courses are free, students will have to pay for enrollment, and for taking exams.
